Tips to Avoid Drinking

Here's How:

  • If you are unsure if non-alcoholic beverages will be available, bring your own.

  • Stay away from the bar area.

  • If offered a drink, just say, 

    • 'No, thank you.' You do not have to explain.

    • Alcohol’s NOT my thing.

    • No, thanks; I have better things to do!

    • I don’t feel like it — do you have any soda?

    • Are you talking to me? FORGET it.

    • Why do you KEEP pressuring me when I’ve said NO?

    • Back off!

  • Do not leave your drink unattended. It is easy to slip drugs into a drink at a party - it's no joke!

  • If there is food available, be sure to eat, so that you are not hungry.

  • If you feel that you are becoming tempted to drink, leave early.

  • Stay busy. Talk to others, dance, etc. Don't give yourself time to think about the fact that you are not drinking.

  • Don't drink, no matter what!

  • Never ride with a person who has been drinking or doing drugs.

  • Have a back-up plan if you need a ride home. 

Tips:

  1. They will never know that you only have cola in your glass.

  2. Arrive late and leave early.

  3. If you are at a party where people are drinking make sure their is an appointed designated driver and choose not to drink yourself.

  1. You're role as a responsible party host is to prevent your friends from becoming the next alcohol-related statistic and to provide an environment where everyone can enjoy themselves.

  2. Plan some group activities -- music, dance, games, pool, movies.

  3. Avoid too many salty snacks - which makes people want to drink more.

  4. Invite people who will like each other and have fun together.

  5. Mix up some great non-alcoholic recipes.

  6. Do not let anyone underage drink alcohol. If an adult comes to your party and drinks, don't be afraid to tell them drinking is not acceptable at your party.

How do I spot a drunk driver?

These are warning signs and you should take down the license number and vehicle description . . . you may just be able to stop an accident about to happen.

  • Speeding and slowing down rapidly

  • Weaving in and out of traffic

  • Appearing to be drunk - face close to windshield, drinking in the vehicle, eyes staring

  • Driving on the center line or straddling lanes. Drifting from side to side.

  • Wide turns

  • Tailgating

  • Nearly striking object or curb

  • Not responding or slowly responding to traffic signals

  • Driving the wrong direction on a road

  • Driving with headlights off at night

  • Braking or stopping with no apparent reason
