Thoughts from adult with FASDs who Have Been FASD Kids

Please tell us on FASlink how you learned to read?

I really can't recall when I started putting words together into sentences and understanding the had a meaning! I have never enjoyed reading as it takes so long for me to understand a page, I have to re-read a sentence several times for it to take hold and then re-read the whole page several times and then turn the page and start this all over again going back to the other page to understand what this page is talking about by the time I read a chapter the first chapter I am so mentally exhausted that I put the book down and listen to music. I can't have music on while reading, my mind wants me to sing with the song so I need complete silence anything distracts me and I lose interest!

"How Long it to me to learn to read?"

As I said to today I am struggling to read and I find working with the computer the best teacher! I was never in Special Ed and had to squeak on by on everything! I'm still learning and hope to put together some programs soon as to what works best with me!

"What methods you can remember that your teachers used to teach You?"

What I remember having a classmate usually a girl help me write homework to do and other important daily learning tasks! The Teacher would have the girl sit next to me and I would not be thinking of the subject being taught LOL.

I would have puppy love every time! I also had a paid tutor the Mom and Dad sent me to, I remember Mrs. Detrick (Yes I can even remember Her name) She would get so upset with me because I would remember nothing from the other time!

I would have to say that I get to where I am Today by allowing myself the right to make mistakes and by accepting that I just can read certain words and understand them from the glance and always having a Dictionary handy!

"You are a good speller"

I only wish, I am alway using a spell check I keep handy and use it several times eack of my posts, if I am Instant Messaged I take a long time to respond not because I am not intrested but I am looking up words on My Casio Spell Check!

This post has taken me 55 mins. to compose because I have to look up words (such as several, mistakes, tutor, squeak, are a few I had to look up)

Every once in a while I get upset with myself for being this way but my walk with the Lord kicks in (no pun intended LOL) I am back to accepting myself again!

My problem was not knowing I was FAE until age 43yrs, I was expected to fly with the flock when I had a broken wing! Using this broken wing to try to glide with all my peers, was a living hell but the worst was failing and seeing the Disappointment in Mom and Dads Eyes as They read my failing report card!

I hope this helped and feel free to ask more questions, this took me a hour and 15 mins to post!  Zoe sends His Licks and Tail Wags
